AION cars are designed by teams across Guangzhou, Shanghai and Milan, with the European centre serving as a vital hub in the brand’s global design strategy. This centre blends Eastern automotive innovation with European aesthetics.

For the development and production of vehicles across its brand portfolio – including AION – GAC has extensive long-standing relationships with world-class tier one suppliers. This provides GAC with access to the very latest next-generation technologies and to expertise refined over decades from experience gained working with established international automotive brands. This extensive know-how means every AION V benefits from best-in-class tech, components, sub-systems and assembly techniques.

The AION V is a tough-looking C-segment SUV that defies the trend of generic SUVs entering the market. Immediately recognisable from its signature cyber-dragon claw front and rear lights, and fitted as standard with 19-inch alloy wheels, the AION V has a reassuringly strong and solid presence on the road.

It is available in six exterior paint finishes:

AION V boasts a low aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.28 Cd. Its form and surfacing were fine-tuned in one of China’s most advanced wind tunnels at GAC’s Guangzhou R&D centre.

Contributing to the clean exterior bodysides are flush mechanical door handles and an active grille shutter in the lower front bumper.

The striking rugged exterior is contrasted by the serenity that greets the occupants once on board. Its ‘ultra comfort’ interior boasts the highest standard specification in the sector, while the long 2,775mm wheelbase creates an airy and spacious cabin with surprisingly generous legroom for both front and rear passengers.

The full-length 2,030 mm panoramic roof – with electric sunblind – bathes the standard Noir black interior in light, where soft touch fabrics are married with supple perforated leatherette upholstery with genuine stitching.

A minimalist dash with subtly textured surfaces and luxuriously quilted leatherette internal door styling portrays a premium ambience more commonly found in higher end brands in the segment above. A heat embossing process during manufacture creates a soft, fine-grain texture on the upholstery surfaces, achieving a leather-effect appearance.

A surprisingly quiet interior enhances the calm and refined driving experience, aided in no small part by double-glazed front windows. The AION V is one of only a few cars in this or the class above to offer this feature.

The heated, four-way adjustable two-spoke steering wheel is home to easy-to-access physical buttons on each spoke. The driver has a clear view through the steering wheel to the 8.9-inch LCD colour touchscreen instrument panel, which displays key driving information.

The front seats are configured in an enveloping ‘Butterfly’ design, and are also heated and ventilated, with six-way electric adjustability for the driver (with six memorised profiles) and four-way electric adjustability for the front passenger, ensuring every journey is comfortable every time and for every occupant. Rear passengers also benefit from heated seats, which split and fold 60:40. The rear centre arm rest incorporates twin cupholders and a handy storage tray for personal devices. The feeling of quality extends even to the chrome door handles, which are damped for a soft and quiet retraction.

Dual zone climate control allows the front occupants to each set their preferred temperature independently, while rear passengers also benefit from a dedicated pair of air vents from the rear of the centre console.

A 32-colour ambient lighting system runs throughout the cabin, with various options to tailor the hue and intensity to individual preferences, via a menu in the centre touchscreen. The colour can either be set manually, or can be set to match the interior mood to the selected drive mode (red for Sport; blue for Comfort; green for Eco). Once the colour is chosen, users can opt for Rhythm mode that sees the lighting pulse in time with the beat and tempo of the music playing through the ADiGO sound system, or Breathing mode where it softly pulses at slow speed.

The centre console houses space to hold two smartphones side-by-side, with one section incorporating a fan-cooled 50W wireless charging pad, and two generous chrome-ringed cup holders. Below this under the lower floating centre console are a handy USB-A and USB-C sockets and a lower storage tray, one of several generous storage cubbies, which also include wide and deep door pockets and a large six-litre storage box between the front seats.

Premium Pack (£1,495)
Adding extra sophistication to the AION V, the Premium Pack upgrades seat upholstery to leather and adds eight-point, five-mode massage function for both driver and front passenger seats.

It also replaces the centre console cubby with a 6.6-litre three-mode CoolHot Box, making it a breeze to keep a takeaway warm at up to 50 degrees C, or cool a six-pack of regular drinks cans, or keep a box of ice-creams at down to minus 15 degrees C. Once set, temperature can be maintained even when the car is parked and locked, so that food and drink doesn’t spoil if you need to stop on the way home at a friend’s, the gym or the school play. Front seat occupants can set the temperature through the centre touchscreen, and rear seat passengers have a dedicated control panel at the rear of the centre console. Its low energy consumption means that even if it were running 24 hours-a-day, the CoolHot Box would only consume 0.5kWh. Nevertheless, a failsafe halts its operation if required to ensure the battery state of charge doesn’t fall below 10 percent.

The Premium Pack also offers the left-rear seat passenger a sturdy seat-back tray-table to use for work, reading or to rest a tablet on to watch a movie. When folded, the tray-table integrates seamlessly with the seatback, and the sturdy scissor-action folding mechanism means it won’t bang into the user’s knees when opening or folding it away.

The Premium Pack also unlocks the option for buyers to choose an additional exterior paint finish – metallic Holographic Silver (£675) – and the option to select the classy French Cream or bold Bright Tan interior leather upholstery (both £195).

A large 14.6-inch landscape colour touchscreen sits at the top of the centre console and provides intuitive access to myriad infotainment options, settings and functions.

The AION V’s onboard computing systems are driven by GAC’s proprietary AI-powered ADiGO operating system, which coordinates ADAS, infotainment, AI, cloud services, and updates in perfect harmony to enhance the user experience. ADiGO is powered by the latest next-generation automotive-grade Qualcomm Snapdragon™ SA8155P processor that ensures instant responses to user selections, functions and settings through the touchscreen or via the virtual assistant. It makes interacting with AION V fast and intuitive as possible, while also being energy-efficient, too.

Easy access to key settings are presented permanently at the lower edge of the touchscreen, including climate control, seat controls, audio volume, heated rear screen, 360-degree surround view, door lock/unlock, and quick access to the panoramic roof blind settings.

A dedicated section of the menu on the homescreen can be customised with user-defined widgets, so that user’s favourite functions can be more easily and quickly accessed.

The entire display can be set to a light or dark theme, while users can also upload an image of their choice to use as a desktop background, or even a whole photo album for the background to scroll through.

Wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto ensure seamless access to users’ favourite apps at all times, with a WiFi hotspot to ensure personal devices are always connected.

The ADiGO intelligent virtual assistant is accessed either via a button on the steering wheel or by voice-prompt. It provides intuitive voice-activated access and selection of key controls and settings, including climate, windows and audio settings. Voice controls benefit from four-zone recognition, meaning a rear passenger can say ‘open my window’, and the virtual assistant will lower the appropriate window for that occupant.

For music-lovers, the ADiGO-powered audio system features nine speakers with a combined output of 360 W. A tweeter at the base of each A-pillar and a subwoofer in each of the front doors corner is complemented by two further bass units in the rear doors and three mid-range speakers above the front door armrests and in the centre of the dash.

The ADiGO Sound Lite function enables selection of zonal audio direction, customising the focus of the audio output to four zones: driver, front passenger, the centre of the car, or the rear. It also offers users the option to select from a number of pre-defined high-fidelity equaliser settings.

Practicality and versatility is built in to the AION V. It boasts class-leading interior space and access, such that might be expected in cars from larger segments.

The rear doors open to a surprisingly wide 89 degrees, making for the easiest of ingress and egress, as well as for straightforward loading and unloading of a baby seat. Both outboard rear seats feature i-Size compatible fittings.

Not only is boot access highly practical, with a 1,101 mm loading width, and the loading lip 748 mm high from the ground, but boot capacity is also very impressive – and customisable thanks to a three-layer boot floor system. A deep boot well offers an ideal voluminous space for charging cable and tyre inflation kit (or space-saver tyre if selected as an option). The moveable boot floor can be laid in a lower position, with a shallow tray area beneath and a floor level below the boot lip. Or the floor can be lifted and positioned at the boot lip level, affording a more generous lower boot underneath, and a level floor to load into. The boot floor folds providing easy access to the lower tier, whatever level it is at. This provides for a variable height of hidden storage beneath the floor and aids loading and unloading of bulky or heavy items, when needed.

Combined boot capacity to the parcel shelf with the rear seats upright is 427 litres (VDA), while with the rear seats folded the maximum cargo capacity is 1,638 litres (VDA).

In addition, there are no fewer than 30 separate storage compartments and cubbies throughout the V’s interior.

For loads best kept outside the car, roof rails with a weight capacity of 75kg are fitted to every car.

The AION V offers two flexible seating configurations for breaks during longer journeys and for long stopovers, when the vehicle is parked.

Rest mode activates a relaxed interior theme by reclining the occupied front seat/s to horizontal, closing the roof sunblind, offering a choice of slow-paced music or calming natural soundscapes, and engaging the ambient lighting’s slowly pulsing Breathing function. The climate control sets the interior temperature to 26 degrees C to support restfulness. With an automatic gentle wake-up timer to ensure the journey can continue on schedule, Rest mode is ideal for taking a short break or a nap on long journeys.

Lounge mode turns the AION V’s interior into an entirely different space. With the rear seat reclined to the maximum 129-degree pitch and the front seat headrest removed, the front seat can be reclined to a horizontal position. The occupant can sit in the reclined rear seat for the ultimate in-car relaxation, ideal for sleep or watching a movie on the centre touchscreen. Entry and egress are simple through the wide-opening rear doors.

At 317 miles on WLTP Combined cycle, the AION V is the longest standard range electric C-segment SUV in the UK.

The car is built around GAC’s third-generation AEP 3.0 electric vehicle platform – a long-wheelbase skateboard architecture – which integrates the battery and drivetrain to free up interior cabin space.

The AION V’s 400V electrical architecture and 180kW DC charging capacity means a 10 – 80 percent recharge can take as little as 24 minutes, and 30 – 80 percent in just 18 minutes. The 11 kW onboard charger enables fast and convenient AC home charging from 0 – 100 percent in around 8.5 hours, ideal when plugged in overnight. Via the AION app, owners can start, stop and schedule charging without even leaving the sofa.

Developed in conjunction with global battery technology leader, CATL, the AION V’s Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery has a capacity of 75.3 kWh. This battery chemistry does not need to limit the upper and lower states of charge in the same way NMC batteries do, because LFP benefits from greater chemical stability, ore robust tolerance to high states of charge, and exceptional cycle life. This means all 75.3 kWh of capacity is available to be used.

The AION V’s battery design, configuration and packaging employs GAC’s proprietary Magazine Battery 2.0 technology. It employs a "magazine-style" design with battery packs housed in independent ultra-high heat-resistant compartments and multi-layer insulation for effective passive thermal management. A fifth-generation all-climate 24/7 high frequency battery monitoring system can activate industry-first active rapid cooling technology that boosts heat dissipation by 30%. This enables more efficient active thermal management to eliminate cell overheating and consequent degradation and damage.

As the first battery safety technology to pass both nail penetration tests and bullet impact tests without any resultant ignition, open flame or thermal runaway. GAC’s Magazine Battery 2.0 is believed to be the safest EV battery in any car currently on sale globally.

The electronic drive unit (EDU) makes use of low-voltage silicon carbide (SiC) technology, and shares the same molecular and mechanical structure as high performance vehicles 900V high-voltage materials. This means the AION V’s motor benefits from low energy losses and high peak power control efficiency of up to 99.85 percent. Only a handful of vehicle manufacturers use this high-end technology in series production cars.

AION is the first car maker to mass produce X-pin hairpin winding electromagnetic technology, incorporating multi-path parallel design that enhances cooling performance. The motor achieves a maximum operating speed of up to 18,000 rpm, with peak speeds exceeding 18,000 rpm. Overall motor efficiency is 96 percent, and with a power density of 10.5 kW/kg, it achieves full power and torque output while occupying only 60 percent of the volume of a typical motor.
In the AION V, this technological leadership results in a smaller, lighter motor that’s more efficient, delivers greater range, reduced NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness), and an enhanced comfort and refinement in the passenger cabin.

The AION V comes as standard with a super-efficient four-stage 10 kW heat pump that helps keep the battery at the optimal operating temperature, in turn helping to maximise operational efficiency and therefore driving range and charging speeds, even on the coldest winter days. It can operate in temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees C. It also has the added benefit of heating the cabin with far greater energy efficiency than a traditional resistive interior heater. The heat pump is one of the lightest and most efficient in the industry, with around 50% of the parts count of a conventional unit, resulting in it being 48% lighter.

With a further nod to optimal versatility, vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology makes it easy to use the AION V as a personal power bank on days out, camping trips or simply to power the mower when the house socket is just too far for the cord to reach. With the aid of an adapter through the dealer accessory list, the charging port becomes a domestic three-pin socket providing up to 3.3 kW at 220v AC. A failsafe halts the V2L function if required to ensure the battery state of charge doesn’t fall below 10 percent.

Power is delivered to the front wheels via a single highly efficient 150kW (204 PS) motor that boasts 240 Nm maximum torque, balancing responsive performance with everyday efficiency and optimal range.

The front-wheel drive AION V rides on an efficient MacPherson independent suspension at the front, paired with a torsion beam at the rear for a proven combination of structural simplicity and robustness with a well-controlled ride. This suspension arrangement noticeably maximises cabin space and boot space, both of which are either class-leading or among the top in their class, depending on the specific measure used.

Ventilated 320mm front disc brakes and solid 308mm rear discs are supported by an Auto Hold functionality to provide added convenience in stop-start driving conditions on the UK’s congested roads.

Drivers are able to choose from three drive modes – Sport, Comfort (the default at each start-up) and Eco - to ensure the AION V’s characteristics match the driver’s preferred driving style.
Sport mode makes available the maximum torque is available from the motor, sharpens the throttle response and engages the strongest energy regeneration setting to support the braking to ensure the keenest progress can be made. Eco mode limits the throttle response and adjusts the climate control parameters, and to ensure maximum range is available should it be needed. Comfort mode provides a balance of efficiency without any limitations to the in-cabin comfort functions.

The ambient lighting also reflects the driving modes, defaulting to red for Sport, blue for Comfort and green for Eco. These lighting settings can be overridden via the central touchscreen.

In addition to the drive modes, three degrees of regenerative braking can be selected, as well as the strongest energy recovery profile that allows for one-pedal driving.

The AION V was designed and developed to be a car sold in markets around the world.Nevertheless, the AION Auto UK team left no stone unturned to ensure the car would be ready and optimised for the British market before it went on sale.

A prolonged period of customer research, focus groups and product clinics with benchmarked class leaders proved invaluable to the team as they planned the launch from product, commercial and operational perspectives.

One notable aspect in preparation for the product’s launch has been the extensive refinement and recalibration of the AION V’s suspension set-up to ensure its optimisation for British roads, British motorists’ preferred driving styles, and British traffic characteristics. Revised spring and damper rates and reconfigured bump stops were the result of joint efforts of AION Auto UK and the manufacturer’s engineering and production teams in China. The process included evaluation of the AION V’s ride and handling by a British-based independent consultant that substantially informed the resulting development of the car’s driving feel, secondary ride and body control.

So happy are the GAC engineers with the resulting dynamic performance of the UK-tailored set-up, that they will roll it out as a new standard configuration for other European markets.

In order to avoid the insurability issue that has blighted many newly launched vehicles, AION Auto UK went to great lengths over a 12-month period to evaluate and take steps to improve the AION V’s low-speed impact performance and repairability. The AION Auto UK team embarked in late 2024 on a highly productive collaboration with Thatcham Research. Following the results of this first assessment, a project was undertaken with GAC’s manufacturing engineering team in China to implement revisions to the subframe. In conjunction with thorough aftersales support, parts inventory and logistics, and repair manuals produced from scratch in Britain for British bodyshops, the AION V’s group 32 insurance rating is one of the lowest among emerging brands in this segment.

These are just two examples of the collaborative efforts – made possible in no small part due to the unique joint venture structure of the UK business – that ensure the AION V is prepared, optimised, and ready for the UK before its launch.

The AION V was awarded five stars by Euro NCAP when it was tested in September 2025.

Passive safety is inherent in the AION V. The body structure makes extensive use of high-strength materials to provide a robust energy-absorbing shell to maintain passenger cell integrity in the event of a collision.

Occupants are further protected by seven airbags, including dual front, side, and 2.3 metre-long curtain airbags. The AION V is among only a few cars on sale – and is thought to be unique among cars from recently launched brands – to incorporate distal airbags that inflate between the front passengers in the event of a side impact to prevent head-to-head collisions.

Child passenger safety is paramount, and the curtain airbag features an extended design to protect child occupants’ heads. In addition, AION V employs EU-standard i-Size fixings in both outboard rear seats.

GAC’s proprietary ADiGO PILOT technology powers its advanced, comprehensive suite of advanced driver assist systems (ADAS) designed to anticipate and minimise risk and prevent accidents on every journey.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Integrated Cruise Assistance (ICA) support relaxed, confident long-distance driving, while Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) and Forward Collision Warning (FCW) provide a critical first line of defence against frontal impacts.

Lane discipline is supported by Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) and Emergency Lane Keeping Assist (ELKA), while Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Rear Collision Warning (RCW) and Door Open Warning (DOW) collectively extend the vehicle's awareness in every direction.

Intelligent High Beam Control (IHBC) optimises visibility after dark, a Driver Monitoring System (DMS) helps alert the driver to possible fatigue and inattention, and a 360-degree camera system provides a complete view of the vehicle's surroundings at low speed.

MY AION is a smartphone app tailored by AION Auto UK to help owners remotely manage their car, check its status and activate key functionality.

It carefully balances simple, intuitive access to useful, convenient functionality without overcomplicating and compromising ease of use. My AION allows users to check the current battery state of charge and, when plugged in, to immediately start or stop charging. Users can also schedule charging, which is ideal for those wishing to take advantage of cheaper overnight energy tariffs.

Particularly useful for those with busy lives or who may occasionally be forgetful, not only can the app be used to remotely lock or unlock the car from the app, but also flash the lights or sound the horn – helpful for finding the car in a large car park.

The climate control can also be set, making sure the car is perfectly comfortable for the start of a trip. Furthermore, a route can be planned on the app and sent to the car in advance so it’s pre-loaded upon start-up and ready to go.

The app’s Book a trip function ensures the AION V is fully prepared for a journey planned in advance for a specific day and time. The passenger cabin will be pre-conditioned at the user’s preferred temperature, and the heated or ventilated seats will be activated at the desired setting. This function also pre-conditions the battery to be at the optimum operating temperature at start-up, ensuring it’s ready to deliver the maximum possible range. The booked trip can be one-off, or can be set to repeat at the same time on selected days every week. With up to five scheduled trips available to use, the car can be ready for every commute, school run, visit to the gym, and other regular journeys. Booked trips are saved in the app, and can be toggled on and off, so that deactivating and reactivating a repeating booked trip is quick and easy.

Owners who opted for the Premium Pack can also activate and set the temperature of the CoolHot Box remotely via the app – useful for preparing it in advance for the takeaway, drinks or ice creams.

The AA partnership brings one of the UK’s most trusted motoring brands on side to offer dual support to AION customers. It will provide its renowned roadside and home-start assistance –covering the car wherever it is in the UK or Europe – to drivers who need urgent support.

In addition, while network coverage is still expanding, the AA’s network of 500 accredited EV-certified workshops will fill any geographical white spaces between AION sites, meaning all customers across the UK will have access to nationwide maintenance and repair to supplement AION’s own aftersales footprint. In addition, one of the AA’s 100 mobile technicians can be booked to come to customers' homes or places of work, making routine maintenance appointments as convenient as possible.

Additionally, AION will harness the AA’s expertise to provide a UK-based customer contact centre. Customers can pick up the phone and speak directly to a real human being about any product or aftersales queries.

The partnership with DHL has been developed to overcome one of the most common concerns and failings for new entrants to the UK market: parts availability and supply. AION will make use of DHL’s world-class inventory and logistics resources with a parts warehouse in Bury St. Edmunds fully operational before the first customer takes delivery in late May. This centrally located hub will stock over 14,000 parts ready for nationwide next-day tracked deliveries via DHL to the customer’s closest AION service centre, AA workshop or mobile technician, so that the repair and replacement can be done as quickly and efficiently as possible, getting the AION V back on the road with minimal fuss and delay.

The Bury St. Edmunds parts warehouse is in turn supported by a European parts hub in Rotterdam for restocking, and provides rapid expedited delivery of any components not already held in the UK.
